Hi all,
On the strength of the commitment of an ever-increasing core group of athletes, our club is attracting all sorts of positive attention. Our group ride last Friday was a great example of this with Paul Wright coming along. As we grow, our training will be diversified to meet the needs of everyone – but our spirit will always remain the same: it’s a full-participation group and we’ll create space for everyone who goes to the trouble to show up.
We had a beautiful run through Sticky Forest last week, and our ride attracted clear, calm conditions – as usual.
Summer Season Launch Meeting – Tuesday 16 October 2018 – 5PM
We’ve done a lot of planning and preparation for the on-going development of our club, and we’d like you to be part of the process. Please mark this date on your calendars and come along (Room 23, Mount Aspiring College) to help navigate this ship. We’ll go through the training principles we are working to, the safety protocols we’ve developed and the events we’re proposing to enter in 2019.
Otago Secondary Schools Duathlon Championships
Some club members have expressed an interest in competing in the Otago Secondary Schools Duathlon which is being held in Mosgiel on Sunday 23 September. While the club hasn’t planned to enter as a group (more on this to come) we heartily support our athletes’ participation in any suitable event – like this one.

If you’re keen, we ask you to arrange your own transport to the event. You must sign up via the sports hub – sports@mtaspiring.school.nz – Sam and I are very happy to offer advice for the event, so do speak to us if you’ve got it locked in.
Our team will enter into a range of tri-sport events in 2019. We’ll train together, plan together, prepare and travel together. Our training programmes are periodised, and focussed on gradually developing the core skills required to succeed in the three sports of Swimming, Cycling and Running – and the combinations thereof. For us, 2018 is all about building our club, our athletic base and learning the techniques and skills that will allow you to enter events in future years with confidence.
Wanaka Triathlon Club.
Our sport is growing in the town – and this weekend the new Wanaka Triathlon Club is launching. It’s our intention to work closely with the club to offer a range of complementary group training sessions – keep an eye out for them at this weekend’s Festival of Sport at the recreation centre.
Mechanic Sessions with Doug from Black Peak Cycles.
These were slated to start soon, but we haven’t yet organised a date. I’ll let you know as soon as we have the dates confirmed. Remember, if you need anything checked on your bike, our local bike shops are very well equipped to keep everything smooth and safe – and Doug is very keen to support our club.
This week’s sessions.
SWIM: Specialist Coaching from Merryn for the fast crew and technique drills for the core crew
RUN: Sustained variable pace training – Lakeside Track
CYCLE: Something a little shorter and more intense this time around.
Remember our group training sessions are open to all – you’re most welcome to come along and join us.
Righto!
Chris and Sam
